Bristol's Musical Mind
Culture Fusion
Exploring the inspiration and diversity of fusion music with RSVP Bhanga
RSVP Bhangra is a music group that fuses bhangra folk music with western music such as rock and pop. It was a pleasure to talk to them as I learned a lot about how Bristol is such a community filled with diversity. From that diversity, RSVP was able to make a name for themselves.

The important information I got during my interview with the band is that the band also agrees that the sound system culture was a very big influence on the South West, and even Caribbean music was an influence on the band. this was mainly because of how Dildar grew up in a predominantly Afro Caribbean area.

What also caught my attention was how they explained that audiences in the South West are more open-minded and enthusiastic towards music. Even though Bristol is the biggest city in the South West, they are nearly not as big as cities like Birmingham and London, in which they have a higher population of Indian immigrants and artists and music groups like RSVP. This is why they think they are well received in Bristol because there is not as many bhangra or bhangra fusion bands like RSVP, this creates a new/rare experience for people in Bristol, as they may not be able to find events like RSVP in Bristol again easily like in London.
During the interview, they have also mentioned things that supported my research. With one point being that Bristol is a city filled with culture and people do not mind diverting from traditions and bringing people from different backgrounds to be a part of bhangra music.
Because of this large diversity in Bristol, I don't see the end of fusion bands in the future as even now people in the UK are mixing western music along with their cultural music. A very good example I can think of is Afrobeat especially alternative afrobeat, as the youth in the UK are embracing their culture and mixing it with UK music. I also think it's due to how more people are open and proud of their backgrounds, in the past this was not easily the case.
